Pilot Skins, Clay Patterns and Wax Sculptures

Ponies were created using a method known as "lost wax casting". Initially a pony would be sculpted in clay or wax and a mould made was then made. The mould was tested by the factory before it goes into full production. These very first pulls from the mould are known as a "pilot skin". Pilot skins are often in odd colours as they used what ever plastic or vinyl was in the machine at the time.
